Below are some important points extracted from the article "Investors put off by high-cost, low-speed broadband in M'sia" from The Business Times(Singapore).
- "Malaysian broadband offers some of the lowest speeds in the region, but at the highest costs"
- "The government must deregulate or liberalise gateways in order to improve competitiveness by providing larger broadband at lower costs," said Ryaz Patel, Intel Electronics country manager for Malaysia and Brunei
- "The lacklustre quality and high cost of broadband is hurting the country's knowledge aspirations come on the heels of warnings by Australian businesses that slow Internet speeds were putting them off investing in Malaysia,"
- "Large technical documents from Australia had difficulty getting sent over because of the poor quality broadband. Australian and American investors see this as a nuisance and an impediment to them to do business successfully here,"
- "Malaysian consumers pay significantly more for broadband, but even to buy broadband wholesale as a service provider was 'frighteningly expensive' compared to its neighbours. "

You should send this to the press and ask them to publish it on newspaper so that ministers know... cause some of them still don't know how to use the internet and stil boasting how great we are when it comes to broadband. pui!
Of course it's expensive to buy broadband in Malaysia. Penetration is still below 50%. It's a scarce resource. The comment about wholesale broadband is certainly true, because there is so much potential to develop broadband service in Malaysia. The opportunity cost is high, thus the high wholesale price.
It's the economics.
Yes Yes Yes i agreeee with the previous comment ... should put into news papers ...
Some smart alec will however justify that we are better than Ghana...
Not really gonna complain since I get a steady 120kB/s (ie. 960kbps out of the advertised 1Mbps) whenever I go to download something that isn't throttled, but I did have to complain nearly every day for three months in a row to get this consistency/speed.
well.. somebody will said we are better than Ghana or TimPaktu and then he will said our price is cheaper than Japan or Europe..(when convert to RM). I believe it will be the boss of TM or our beloved Mr R Y..
Funny is cultural mix with IT... Do he know how to use computer?
My friend from Australia says that she's more concerned about size of upload/download. Over there, speed is relative because usage is strictly capped. Service is shaped to 64kbps after breaching the quota. She's on a $69.90 deal with speed of up to 10mbs but capped at 150gb per month downloads.
Here in Malaysia, fixed broadband is unlimited! I guess it's a question of whether we want size or speed. Perhaps Telcos should have different packages for different user segments.
Anyway, I have no complaints about my broadband service. From where I live, so far it's so good!
