Malaysia: 17.5 Million Internet Users, 5 Million on Broadband, 10 Million on 3G
Speaking at the World Bloggers & Social Media Summit 2011 here at PWTC today, Minister of Communication Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim revealed that Malaysia currently have 17.5 million Internet users as of April 2011.
Out of that number, there are 5 million broadband users, 2.5 million wireless broadband users and 10 million 3G subscribers.
In an unrelated matter, Malaysian Wireless questioned about the recent move by the Malaysian Government in blocking access to 10 file-sharing websites.
The Minister told the media that his ministry will continue to block websites that have criminal element or committed crime. However when Malaysian Wireless asked if the Ministry plans to block Facebook since there have been a number of crimes(took place on Facebook), the Minister responded by saying “That will not happen”. He also said Youtube will not be blocked despite it having hundred of contents that are illegally uploaded.
