YouTube, the world’s largest online video sharing community, has announced the launch of a localised service for Malaysia. Users can visit this localised Malaysia site by choosing “Malaysia” as the location setting at the bottom of the YouTube.com homepage or going directly to www.youtube.com.my.
The brand new YouTube Malaysia offers a local interface for Malaysians to easily and quickly find videos most relevant to them, including expanded content from local and global partners. The site will create a new online space for the national community and give Malaysian creators the opportunity to increase their exposure.
In conjunction with this launch, YouTube has forged partnership agreements with top Malaysian media companies, including Astro Malaysia and KRU Studios. These partners are establishing a strong presence on YouTube in order to easily distribute their content and increase their total audience.
In anticipation of the localised service for Malaysia, YouTube has signed a licensing agreement that will allow Malaysian musicians and composers represented by the collecting society Music Author’s Copyright Protection (MACP) to earn revenue on YouTube. Revenue is generated when advertisements are displayed against YouTube partner’s videos. Under this agreement, Malaysian authors will now receive payments from their associations when rights holders distribute them.
For the launch week, YouTube has secured masthead advertisement on the YouTube Malaysia home page from Dutch Lady, Malaysia Airlines, Maxis, Standard Chartered.
