Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, Volume 18

In the latest Symantec Corp’s Internet Security Threat Report, Volume 18 (ISTR) published last month, the leading IT security company indicates a surge in overall cybercrime during 2012 as compared to the prior year.

Highlighting the increase in vulnerability of manufacturing sector and small businesses, the report also highlighted the heightened risk of ransomware and mobile threats to consumers, particularly on the Android platform, as it is an open platform.

Celcom awarded Mobile Service Provider of the Year

At 2013 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Excellence Awards last night, Celcom Axiata Berhad won a total of three industry excellence awards at Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The mobile operator chalked up its fifth annual recognition as Mobile Service Provider of the Year and its second win for the Broadband Service Provider of the Year award. This was also the first time that Celcom was recognised as Telecommunications Wholesale Service Provider of the Year.

Viber Updates Mobile Apps, announced Desktop Version

Mobile VoIP provider, Viber has released version 3.0 of its platform for its Android and iOS mobile users along with the newly launched Viber Desktop application for PC & Mac users.

In a media release, the company said that Viber Desktop and the latest versions of the Viber app were designed from the ground up for individuals using Viber on multiple devices, so they can always use the app that’s right for them, whether at home, in school, at the office, or on the go.

REDtone Mobile outsource Contact Centre to VADS

REDtone Mobile Sdn. Bhd has outsourced its Customer Service Contact Centre to VADS Berhad (VADS).

Operating since end last month, the new contact centre is located at the Puchong Financial Corporate Centre (PFCC). As a start, it is currently operating with a team of 10 Customer Service Executives and one team leader. REDtone said that it plans to employ more than 40 customer service executives by the end of this year. [...]

Maxis 4G LTE SpeedTest [Part 1]

MalaysianWireless have been able to test out Maxis 4G LTE at a limited number of areas for the 3-4 days and the results have been pretty amazing.

Despite we were not able to carry out a drive test around Klang Valley yet, below are some of the speedtest results we have on Maxis LTE which were posted earlier on our Facebook page. All test were performed using a Maxis postpaid SIM and a LTE smartphone.

This fastest speed we have obtained so far is at Maxis Centre KLCC- Download speed 33Mbps, upload more than 20Mbps while ping is excellent at 25ms. Test was done using a Samsung Galaxy Note II LTE. [...]

TM part of Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) submarine cable system

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) on Tuesday morning signed an agreement with five (5) other regional telco players – Vodafone Group, UAE’s Etisalat, Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axiata, India’s Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, and Omantel of Oman, forming a consortium for the establishment of the Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) submarine cable system.

The submarine cable system which was initiated and spearheaded by TM and the Vodafone Group (Vodafone), will link Malaysia (through Penang) and Singapore to the Middle East (Oman and United Arab Emirates) with connections reaching out to India (Mumbai and Chennai) and Sri Lanka. [...]

Samsung Galaxy S4 from Celcom as low as RM1338

Celcom Axiata Berhad will be offering the Samsung Galaxy S4 with Celcom First Plans from as low as RM1338.

At the launch tomorrow however, customers in line to purchase the Samsung Galaxy S4 can stand a chance to get vouchers worth up to RM750 and also RM240 worth of airtime rebate. Which means that using the vouchers, the Galaxy S4 will be offered for as low as RM588 and customers must sign up for any of the Celcom First Voice + Data mPro bundle plans.

Samsung Galaxy S4 as low as RM899 from U Mobile

U Mobile revealed its contract plans for one the most anticipated Android device in Malaysia – the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 from U Mobile cost as low as RM899 from U Mobile or RM799 for the first 200 customers.

As part of the launch promotion, U Mobile is offering the first 200 Samsung Galaxy S4 customers a rebate of RM100 . This rebate applies to those who purchase this device paired with the U Postpaid plan from the two-day roadshow held from, 27 April to 28 April 2013 at the Ground Floor concourse near its flagship store in Berjaya Times Square, and U Mobile outlets at Ipoh Parade (10am – 10pm) and Seremban outlet (9am – 6pm).

DiGi Reports 10.4 million Subscribers as of Q1 2013 [Business]

DiGi.Com Berhad recorded higher revenue of RM1,647 million in the first quarter of 2013, up 5% compared to the same period last year. This was mainly driven by mobile internet revenue which grew 55% year-on-year, from a larger base of 5.8 million mobile internet customers, including 3.0 million smartphone users.

For the quarter under review, DiGi’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was RM720 million, at a margin of 44%. Profit after tax grew by 3% year-on-year to RM329 million in the quarter mainly due to lower accelerated depreciation, the company said.

DiGi currently has about 10.4 million subscribers(10,372 million), slightly lower than what the operator had as of Q4 2012(10.5 mil). Based on the latest numbers, DiGi prepaid subscribers dropped from 8,823 mil prepaid subscribers as of end last year to 8,694 mil prepaid subscribers as of March 2013, a difference of 120,000. [...]
