Telekom Malaysia Posts Higher Q1 Profit

Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) recorded a higher pre-tax profit of RM846.7 million for the first quarter (Q1) ended March 31, 2007 compared with RM842.09 million in the same quarter last year.

Revenue for the quarter rose to RM4.181 billion from RM3.787 billion due to higher revenue contribution from mobile, data and internet and multimedia segments, the company said in a statement, here Monday.

Its profit after tax and minority interest (PATAMI) amounted to RM595.7 million in the quarter, up 9.2 percent from RM545.6 million posted in the same quarter of last year.

Group chief executive officer, Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar, said TM was delighted that its efforts to strengthen the group’s domestic business had borne fruits as reflected by Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd’s improved performance and the strong growth of the group’s internet and multimedia segments.

He said its international operations also grew significantly, contributing 28 percent to group PATAMI and 27 percent to group revenue.

Abdul Wahid said that the group also registered 35.9 percent growth in its total mobile customers to 30.3 million in the quarter reviewed from 22.3 million in the previous corresponding quarter.

Celcom grew its revenue to RM1,185.6 million in the quarter under review from RM1,015.2 million posted in the same quarter of 2006 due to significant improvement in prepaid revenue which stood at RM682.5 million from RM558.8 million.

This was achieved despite the decrease in customer base to 6.2 million as against 7.2 million 2006 as a result of the termination of the non-registered prepaid customers in late 2006.
