Press Release from Maxis

More than 12 million Maxis Berhad (‘Maxis’) customers may now enjoy the full experience of next generation smart devices such as the iPad 3G with the introduction of the micro SIM from Malaysia’s leading communications provider. The micro-SIM, specially manufactured for the new phase of smart devices, is smaller in size compared to the standard GSM SIM.

Jean-Pascal Van Overbeke, Chief Operating Officer of Maxis, said, “Maxis welcomes iPad  3G owners with the introduction of the micro SIM in Malaysia. Maxis customers will be the first in Malaysia to be able to purchase the micro SIM by just walking into any of our 31 Maxis centres nationwide. We are pleased to be the first to offer this convenience to customers in Malaysia who are looking forward to the best technologies and services compatible with the latest telecommunications devices.  A recent report predicts that smart phones of the near future will very likely be adopting the micro SIM as a standard feature1. Maxis is pleased to be able to meet the future needs of our customers today.”

The micro SIM from Maxis may be used with both Mobile Data and Broadband plans. Customers may sign up for an Enhanced Mobile Data Plan at the following prices: RM58 for RM500MB, RM78 for 1.5GB, and RM88 for 3GB. Meanwhile, Maxis Broadband customers may sign up for the following plans: RM48 for 1.5GB, RM68 for 3GB and RM98 for 6GB (promotion ends 31 May).

Since SIM cards were first introduced globally, mobile device manufacturers have tried to fit maximum features into minimum space. The micro SIM is a natural product of this evolution and will in the very near future be able to address a wide range of communications devices which are sleeker in design. It is currently being used globally for  devices such as the iPad 3G.

Apple launched the iPad 3G on 30 April in the United States and has announced that the iPad 3G would go on sale in nine international markets – Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom – on 28 May, with pre-ordering in these markets to begin on 10 May. Meanwhile, Apple will commence the third stage of its global iPad 3G rollout in July when the device will go on sale in nine more countries, including New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Since launch, Apple claims to have sold 1 million iPads in the first 28 days, with users downloading over 12 million apps and more than 1.5 million e-books.2
