Maxis said that it will trial LTE within the next 2 months at an undisclosed location in the Klang Valley.
According to TheStar report, the 900 Mhz and 2.5 Ghz spectra may be allocated for 4G services sometime next year. It is believed that Maxis will trial the new 4G technology on the 2.5Ghz band as Maxis claims that it has conducted a trial on the 900Mhz for 3G last year.
Maxis said that it is investing RM1.4 billion this year to expand and improve its network. The mobile operator, currently with a subscriber base of over 12 million users said that it has covered 60% of the human populated area in Malaysia with 3G and targets to hit 80% by year end with more focus in Sabah & Sarawak.
In 2008, Maxis had about 5972 base stations, 6317 in 2009 and 7033 base stations so far this year. 60% of its base stations are either 3G/HSPA/HSPA+ enabled.
According to its Executive Vice President and Head of Network & Technology, Mark Dioguardi, the load on the Maxis network consist about 70% data traffic and 20% voice. He added that data traffic is expected to increase to about 80% later this year.
