U Mobile deploys 42Mbps, but no one can use

U Mobile announced via the local media that it has set-up one base station that is capable of offering broadband speed up to 42Mbps.

The base station that is currently available in Berjaya Time Square uses Dual-Cell HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access) technology.

To me , it is embarrassing for U Mobile to launch a service that customer’s can’t use for now. This is because the operator is launching the service without any hardware availability.

To enjoy the “up to” 42Mbps HSPA+ speed, U Mobile customers will require a HSPA+ modem. Based on U Mobile’s press release, website and local media reports, there were no mention of any HSPA+ modem availability and pricing.

I’m disappointed with our Minister of Information, Communication and Culture, YB Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim because he launched a service that can’t be used by the public at this point of time.

While U Mobile said it will deploy the new HSPA+ service in other cities by the end of the year,  the communication Minister said that two companies will offer 100Mbps broadband access in March next year.

Anyway, I’m glad to see headlines on “Two operators to roll out 100Mbps” rather than U Mobile’s “Fastest Broadband….” in the news reports.
