It has been decided by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that “LTE-Advanced1” and “WirelessMAN Advanced2 (802.16m/WiMAX2)” are now part of the IMT-Advanced wireless standard, qualifying them as true 4G technologies.
In simple words, today’s flavors of WiMAX and LTE don’t qualify as 4G.
P1 on last week announced that it has changed its service name from “P1 WiMAX” to “P1 4G”.
When YTL says “YTL 4G Network”, it is not a “marketing term”. YTL is clearly saying that their WiMAX network is part of the 4G standard. Refer their press release here.
YTL and P1 WiMAx are both deploying WiMAX technology using the IEEE 802.16e standard which is not part of current 4G standard as defined by the ITU.
On September 23, a formal complaint was filed with the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) on Digicel (a WiMAX operator in Jamaica) for “misrepresenting its WiMax broadband technology as fourth generation or 4G”.
Consumer forum/group in Malaysia are powerless since YTL have been branding their network as 4G for the past 1-2 years and nothing has stopped them.
Our communication regulator(SKMM) knows that all Malaysians are being fooled by P1 and YTL with the 4G term, but they are just watching. Note that SKMM works for the public, not for the WiMAX operators.
P1 and YTL will continue to provide misleading information of its service to the Malaysian public and this might go on for the next few years. However both companies are looking forward to upgrading their network to the real 4G, 2-3 years from now.
