ITU: 4G is a marketing term

There has been lots of talks since the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) announced that current mobile technology including WiMAX & LTE don’t qualify as 4G.

However in a recent update, ITU has clarified its messaging regarding 4G, which is recognized as a marketing term and not used to define a particular standard. It also clearly marks “4G” as separate from the ITU standards names, which are associated with detailed technical specifications.

IMT-Advanced is considered as “4G”, although it is recognized that this term, while undefined, may also be applied to the forerunners of these technologies, LTE and WiMax, and to other evolved 3G technologies providing a substantial level of improvement in performance and capabilities with respect to the initial third generation systems now deployed.-Source

While P1 4G WiMAX is clearly a marketing term, YTL is claiming that YES is a 4G service, from a technical perspective.

Is YTL challenging the ITU? Time would tell.

P.s: Since YTL is 4G, it should be capable of:

“Speed requirements for 4G service set the peak download speed at 100Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).”- as defined by ITU.
