Celcom Axiata and DiGi to share 218 base stations

DiGi & Celcom Axiata have agreed to share an initial of 218 sites or base stations from each provider to save about 2.2 billion ringgit ($719 million) over 10 years.

Axiata Group said that the sharing will remove the duplication of base station sites, address escalating rental fees and reduce utility and transmission costs.

“Both parties, however, expect to see incremental savings as early as 2012 and gradually ramping up to an average annual savings of 150-250 million ringgit combined after 2015,” said Axiata, the country’s second largest mobile phone provider.

Both companies signed an MoU for advance network colloboration in June 2010. Some 4,000 sites will be consolidated and upgraded by 2015 as part of the deal.
