Melaka, 28 July- The rollout of Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) High Speed Broadband (HSBB) service, UniFi continues, with the service now being expanded to Melaka, ahead of the service availability scheduled in 2012 for the state, marking yet another significant achievement in the service roll-out plan.
The service was officially launched today by Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Melaka, and witnessed by Y.B. Senator Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz, Deputy Minister of Information, Communications and Culture, Datuk Dr. Halim Shafie, Chairman, TM, and Datuk Bazlan Osman, Group Chief Financial Officer, TM.
Commenting on the launch, Datuk Dr. Halim said, “Being the first and premier HSBB service provider in Malaysia, TM is proud to be able to launch our UniFi service in Melaka much earlier than what has been scheduled. On behalf of TM, I would like to extend our greatest appreciation to Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam for his undivided support, because under his stewardship, the State Government of Melaka has entrusted us to fulfil the broadband demand of the people here and bring an enhanced and integrated digital lifestyle to the homes of Melaka citizens with the availability of UniFi.”
“Our appreciation also goes to the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture for their commitment in rolling out this national broadband project under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement. This achievement in Melaka is testament to our aspiration to become the preferred communications partner to the Government,” added Datuk Dr. Halim.
With the launch, TM has officially brought UniFi to Melaka and Melaka citizens have started enjoying the service since 15 July, beginning with the residents in the Malim area. By the end of the year, the service will be available to more than 5,600 premises in 15 residential areas connected to the Malim exchange.
In 2012, the coverage will be expanded to the Tangga Batu exchange, with a progressive rollout to other areas to be conducted in phases.
“The State Government of Melaka is excited that the HSBB service is now available and can be enjoyed by the communities in Melaka. We are more than happy to co-operate and collaborate with TM in pushing the roll-out of UniFi in Melaka to a much earlier date, ahead of the initial plan under PPP. I really hope that the provisioning of UniFi will encourage the ICT adoption among the local citizens, and it is in line with the State Government’s aspirations as a Green Technology City,” said Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Ali Rustam.
“The HSBB project is a national infrastructure initiative that is much needed to ensure the competitiveness of our country in the region. It is a catalyst towards transforming Malaysia towards a Knowledge Economy or K-Economy, where we use Information Technology to increase national productivity and competitiveness. HSBB also serves to boost local industry growth in the areas of content, creative multimedia, e-commerce and IT. Indirectly, the HSBB network serves to attract international content providers to base their operations in Malaysia and in turn, encourages national conservation of costs in the long term for consumers and businesses,” said Senator Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz.
Besides UniFi, TM is expanding the availability of its WiFi service in the state, which will have more than 1,200 TM WiFi hotspots by the end of the year up from 700 hotspots available currently. TM is also playing a lead role in efforts to expand broadband penetration to a total of 87,000 households in Melaka.
TM’s rollout of its various services in the state is in support of the Melaka State Government’s aim to encourage the full use of ICT among residents by showcasing Melaka as one of the most developed states in terms of the utilization, availability and access to ICT-related services. This is in line with TM’s commitment to be the preferred partner for the public sector.
