Kuala Lumpur, 27 July 2011- Muslim customers of Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”),  Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, will enjoy the convenience of being able to pay Zakat Fitrah via SMS in Selangor, Melaka, Sabah, Kedah, Perlis, Pahang and Terengganu thanks to Maxis’ mZakat services. Maxis has been appointed as authorised collection agent for Zakat Fitrah on behalf of the states mentioned. Zakat Fitrah refers to obligatory alms which Muslims contribute during Ramadan to help the less fortunate. With Maxis mZakat services, Maxis’ Muslim customers can now fulfill their religious obligation anytime and anywhere.

Maxis’ mZakat services are open to both postpaid and prepaid customers. The Zakat Fitrah payment amount will either be charged to our customer’s postpaid bill or deducted from his or her prepaid airtime. The service is simple to use. The customer can initiate payment by just typing “FITRAH (name of State)” and sending the SMS to 22032. The customer then needs to provide details, such as his or her name, identity card number and the number of people that he or she is paying Zakat Fitrah for. He or she will then receive an SMS on the amount payable. The amount needs to be confirmed before charging can be done. SMSes sent or received by Maxis customers on the mZakat service are free of charge. Furthermore, online receipt printing will be available from the Maxis portal, so that customers are able to print receipts for tax rebate claims.

Fitri Abdullah, Maxis’ Senior Vice-President of Business Services said, “We are pleased to offer our Muslim customers the added convenience of our mZakat services during the holy month of Ramadan, enabling them to fulfill their religious obligations to the less privileged. It is an effective solution for those who have limited time to visit Zakat Fitrah counters or who want to make last minute payments. It is also useful for those who have difficulty making the journey such as those who have work commitments, or those from the disabled community. Best of all, the entire payment transaction takes less than 5 minutes.”

This year, Maxis is partnering with Hong Leong MSIG Takaful Berhad (HLM Takaful) to offer our customers peace of mind with additional Islamic insurance (takaful) coverage worth RM2,000 for the contents of their home from 1 August to 16 September. For just RM2.00 per month, customers are protected for up to RM70,000 for accidental death/ permanent disablement, and for RM2,000 in additional takaful benefits covering contents of the home. Customers can opt into this programme by just sending an SMS with the keyword “BUY TAKAFUL” to 27007.

Fitri added, “Many of our customers travel during this time, leaving their homes to ‘balik kampung.’ They can now do so with peace of mind, knowing that they are covered by a Takaful plan against accidental death and permanent disablement, and also theft or robbery of items in their home while they are away.”

In addition to the accidental death/ permanent disablement and home contents coverage, Maxis’ Muslim participants will enjoy HLM Takaful’s ‘Hajj by Proxy’ service (Badal Haji) or delegation on the performance of Hajj pilgrimage by an authorised party. This option is part of the accidental death and permanent disablement coverage. The Hajj by Proxy service is managed by TH Travel & Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lembaga Tabung Haji.
