Malaysia-based mobile virtual network operator(MVNO), XOX has launched a new mobile application for voice & SMS called Voopee-XOX. Voopee-XOX needs an Internet connection(3G/WiFi) to work and it allows unlimited free calls & free SMS between Voopee users, anywhere around the world.
Users who sign up with Voopee will be given a second Malaysia mobile number(SIM-Free) which is verified via their current mobile number. Customers will be given a choice to choose a nice number.
This second number can also be used while roaming, allowing Voopee users to stay connected with friends & family in Malaysia, at local rates or free.

- Local Voice Call rate: 22sen/min
- Local SMS rate: 10sen/SMS
Currently Voopee-XOX is offering new users a 14-days trial with a RM5 pre-loaded airtime. As a promotion, users can continue using it after the trial period if they sign up for a 6-months validity period at RM60 where they will be given a RM10 airtime.
For Malaysians who are traveling overseas, they can set to forward all their mobile calls to Voopee at local rates. In this case, Voopee-XOX users can receive the call without additional charges using a data connection or via a free WiFi-hotspot. If there’s no available Internet connection, Voopee-XOX will route all calls via GSM where users will be charged for roaming shall they choose to accept the call. Voopee users who have an Internet connection overseas can call back home at local rates without paying those heavy roaming charges.
For now, Voopee has a single server which is located in Cyberjaya, however MalaysianWireless was told that more servers will be added at different locations to ensure a better experience for customers.
At a monthly mobile gathering event called MobileFest, Voopee-XOX CEO, Ng Kok Heng said that the service is still new and XOX hopes to attract more customers before it reveals the full Voopee rate plan to the market within the next 6-months.
Ng said that it was difficult for XOX to attract current mobile users in the country where mobile penetration is currently over 100%. “With Voopee-XOX, users get to keep their current mobile number and the sign up process is easy” he said. It is believed that XOX has about 1.3 million customers currently.
Voopee-XOX is a joint research and technical development venture between a European mobile solution provider and XOX. It is currently available in selected countries such as Malaysia.
The Voopee-XOXÂ app currently works on Android 2.1 & above but it will also be offered on iOS and Blackberry soon.
