Samsung is now the the world’s largest mobile phone maker in the world, for the first time, overtaking Nokia.
According to the latest research report from Strategy Analytics, out of 368 million mobile phones shipped in the first quarter this year(Q1,2012), Samsung shipped 93.5 million handsets worldwide, capturing a record 25 percent market share.
Nokia shipped 82.7 million phones and had 22.5 percent of the market, followed by Apple’s 9.5 percent or 35 million unit of phones shipped.
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Nokia’s global handset shipments declined a huge 24 percent annually to 82.7 million units in Q1 2012. Volumes were squeezed at both ends, as low-end feature phone shipments in emerging markets stalled and high-end Microsoft Lumia smartphones were unable to offset the rapid decline of Nokia’s legacy Symbian business. Nokia was the world’s largest handset vendor between 1998 and 2011, for 14 years, before finally yielding top position to rival Samsung this quarter.”
Smartphones accounted for 34% of Samsung’s handset shipments in the first quarter; smartphones were just 14% of Nokia’s shipments. Samsung is expected to launch its new Galaxy(S3) smartphone next week in London which will help boost sale and compete head to head with the latest iPhone.
