Celcom Axiata has revealed to MalaysianWireless early this month that it has got over 190,000 active iPhone users in their network.
Chari TVT, Chief Financial Officer, Celcom Axiata Berhad also revealed to MalaysianWireless that Celcom currently detects 141,000 tablets in their network including some 90,000 Samsung Galaxy Tabs and 36,000 iPads. Celcom said some 20% of their 12 million customers are smartphone users as of quarter two this year.
Smartphones are generally defined as mobile phones that comes with a mobile operating system and offers web access, advance messaging and allows the use of applications, among others.
In comparison to Celcom, it is believed that Maxis has some 4 million smartphones users where about 60% of them are using prepaid. Meanwhile, DiGi claims that it has over 5.5 million mobile internet users. Both Maxis and DiGi have not revealed their actual breakdown on numbers or type of smartphones users in their network yet.
The iPhone is one of the top selling smartphone in the world, it is designed and marketed by Apple Inc., one of the largest technology company in the world by revenue and profit.
Apple sold some 26 million iPhones as of quarter 3 this year and analysts estimate that up to 33 million iPhone 5 may be sold this quarter alone.
All three mobile operators, Maxis, Celcom and DiGi are expected to offer the upcoming iPhone 5 sometime this year.
