Celcom Axiata Berhad along with 7 other Service Providers have been awarded an allocation of the 2600 MHz spectrum band by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) a few days ago.
In a statement to the press, Celcom said that it has been allocated two 10 MHz blocks for its introduction of Celcom 4G LTE, following intensive network trials and Celcom’s nationwide network upgrading exercise to a single RAN (Radio Access Network) platform that allows it to implement speedy and seamless LTE (Long-term Evolution) upgrades across its current 2G and 3G network infrastructure.
Celcom 4G LTE will first be deployed in selected areas in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor’s Iskandar Malaysia growth corridor, including the Legoland theme park. The mobile operator also plans to invest up to RM300 million over the next three years on ongoing network modernisation that will fully support LTE technology.
Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad, commented, “We aim to roll out our 4G spectrum in market centres across Malaysia over the next six months and our customers can now look forward to the next level of experience including blazing-fast data speeds, enhanced browsing and connectivity, and HD-quality video across their mobile devices.”
“Regardless of wherever they are within Celcom Territory, our customers will enjoy the advantages of our upgraded 4G network supported by Celcom’s current lightning-fast HSPA speeds nationwide which already supports speeds on par with global best-in-class performance.”
Apart from Celcom, the other 7 operators that received the LTE spectrum are DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
