U Mobile 4G LTE Network goes live, offers download speeds up to 75Mbps

U Mobile Sdn Bhd has launched its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network today, offering high speed mobile internet of up to 75 megabits per second (Mbps) for prepaid, postpaid and broadband plan customers. The company is currently one of the two mobile operator to offer 4G LTE service for prepaid customers in Malaysia.

As for the coverage, the U Mobile 4G LTE mobile broadband service is now available to customers at limited areas within the Klang Valley, namely Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Puchong, Berjaya Times Square and Taman Molek in Johor Bahru.

Commenting on the limited U Mobile 4G LTE coverage areas, Wong Heang Tuck, Chief Operating Officer and Acting CEO of U Mobile told MalaysianWireless that the company is expanding to areas where its customers are ready for the service.

“If you look at those areas we have chosen from our database, these are the areas where customers have the most 4G phones, that is why we launch in those areas.”

“At the areas we are launching, we are looking at around 30,000 customers who already owns a LTE device,” he said.

When asked for the LTE coverage expansion, Wong said that U Mobile currently has about 50 LTE sites, mostly powered by ZTE in the Klang Valley and the remaining by Huawei in Johor Bahru. “Next year, we plan to roll out a few hundred more sites”.

He added “As and when we look at the demand is, we are going to roll it out and eventually it should be the same with the rest of the telcos,”

The 4G LTE eligible customers – prepaid, postpaid and broadband plan users will automatically enjoy 4G LTE services and speed whenever they are within the stated coverage areas with their LTE enabled mobile devices (handset or modem). U Mobile said that customers don’t have to change or replace their current SIM card to enjoy LTE.

At the moment, U Mobile customers who are on the following plans are eligible for the 4G LTE services:-

  • Prepaid plans- UMI 38 and UMI 48
  • Postpaid plans- U58, U88, E58, E88, UD68, UD98, UD158, U Premium, U Platinum and Internet Share Plan 68
  • Broadband plans- MB40, MB68 and MB128 for prepaid and postpaid  plans
  • Booster Plans- Prepaid Booster 1GB and Postpaid Booster 1.5GB

To fully activate and enjoy the U Mobile 4G LTE services, customers will need to enable the 4G LTE service via SMS by typing “LTE ON” and send to 28118.

Jasmine Lee, Director of Marketing for U Mobile told MalaysianWireless that the Telco will be launching new data packages and postpaid plans soon. She did not disclose any further details.

In conjunction with the 4G LTE launch, U Mobile will be offering attractive promotional LTE device bundle-plans starting from 17 December 2013 to 31 January 2014. Customers can now take home a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 at the price of RM999 when they sign up for the Ultimate Device 158 plan with a commitment fee of RM120 per month.

U Mobile was among the eight companies within the local mobile industry awarded with the 2,600MHz spectrum by MCMC in December last year for LTE service. Prior to that, U Mobile signed a multi-billion ringgit, 10-year network sharing agreement with Maxis for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE.

U Mobile has been testing LTE service with ZTE for the past 3 years. The trial was capable of download speeds up to 100Mbps. Check out the U Mobile LTE trial video below which was produced in 2011:
