Huawei Demonstrate 400Mbps LTE category 9 in UK

Huawei announced they have teamed with British mobile operator EE and chipset maker Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., to demonstrate 4G LTE category 9 wireless, achieving download speeds of more than 400Mbps in a live test in Wembley Stadium, UK.

To showcase the future capabilities of the EE mobile network, Huawei, EE and Qualcomm Technologies have created a bespoke audio-visual installation at the stadium, featuring multiple 4K and HD screens and lossless audio streaming. The installation gives visitors an authentic Wembley music event experience, showcasing what such extensive network speed and capacity are capable of. The experience provides a taste of what music and sports fans can look forward to in the future.

“We are thrilled to see the innovative technology of LTE-Advanced coming to reality in a place like Wembley Stadium where a speed-hungry application like 4K video streaming is much needed by many simultaneous users. To meet end user expectations, a much higher capacity and a more reliable connection to mobile devices is required,” said Mohamed Madkour, Vice President Marketing, Huawei Wireless Network Product Line. “Huawei’s collaboration with EE and Qualcomm Technologies has allowed all three companies to showcase what is made possible through LTE-Advanced”

To achieve the 400Mbps 4G LTE speeds, EE aggregated 20MHz of 1800MHz spectrum with another 20MHz of 2.6GHz, and a third carrier of 15MHz of 2.6GHz.

“We are in the midst of a digital revolution and we need to have the right infrastructure in place if the UK’s digital economy is to reach its maximum potential. As well as being technology creators, we are a nation of early adopters of new technology, with a voracious appetite for faster and faster connectivity. Exciting developments like this strengthen our position as a world leader on the digital stage,” said Ed Vaizey, Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy.

“This demonstration at Wembley Stadium is an opportunity to show the world the future of the EE mobile network, and what 3-carrier aggregation can do,” said Tom Bennett, director of network services and devices at EE. “We’re showcasing incredibly high speeds here, but what we’re also showcasing is amazing capacity – the ability to provide a great internet connection to so many people all at the same time is vital.”

“Category 9 LTE-A delivers increased capacity across networks and incredibly fast download speeds, providing consumers with dramatically improved mobile connectivity and richer experiences that they are increasingly seeking, such as 4K,” said Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president & president of Qualcomm Europe. “Qualcomm Technologies’ leading modem technology enables advancements in these areas and we’re proud to collaborate with Huawei and EE to demonstrate the future of connectivity.”
