WeChat has 549 million monthly active users globally

WeChat, one of the world’s fastest growing social application, has recently announced that it has reached 549 million monthly active users globally. It had 500 million users three months ago in Q4 2014.

In Malaysia, WeChat claims that it continues its dominance in the mobile social communication space and boasts 95% smartphone penetration rate in the local scene. According WeChat, a research released by GlobalWebIndex (GWI) in November 2015 revealed that the active user base in Malaysia has grown by 1187% from Q1 2013 to Q3 2014 and is expected to continue expanding in future as WeChat introduces more exciting new app features that enhance its subscribers’ mobile experiences.The app is most popular with young demographic of age between 16 to 34 years old, and this age group dominates more than 80% of the WeChat user base.

“We are excited about WeChat’s stellar growth momentum both globally and throughout Malaysia – a strong foothold for the first quarter of 2015. We will continue to focus on enhancing user interaction by broadening the activities from social and communications to gaming, entertainment, media content and beyond, said Louis Song, Country Manager for Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for WeChat from Tencent, the company behind the WeChat app.

He added that Malaysia is a key market for WeChat and the mobile social communication app aims to take social interaction to a deeper level – not just for the users, but also a platform for the brands to interact with theirs consumers through the innovative features.

WeChat is available free for download on Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian and Windows operating system.
