Telenor Group announced that it has surpassed the 200 million mobile subscriber mark globally. The subscriber number includes the 11.7 million subscribers in Malaysia that Digi announced as of Q3, 2015. Digi is part of the Telenor Group.
“Many in Telenor can remember reaching one million subscribers – a once-historic milestone. Since then, the world has changed dramatically and with it, the role of the mobile phone. Today, Telenor is in the hands of more than 200 million people from Malaysia to Norway. Telenor´s early explorers of the 1990s had a vision about bringing the benefits of mobile communications to everyone, but they could hardly have imagined the impact we witness now. Today, our vision goes beyond putting a phone in every hand. We envision an internet for all, and with it all the opportunities that a digital life brings,” said Sigve Brekke, President and CEO of Telenor Group.
As the world evolves to view connectivity as a basic necessity, Telenor Group said it will continue its work in enabling connectivity for all. At the same time, Telenor is exploring new ways to sustain growth, capture customers’ attention and “create value for them”.
Albern Murty, CEO of Digi echoes the Group’s commitment to put internet in the hands of more Malaysians. He said, “Almost everything you want and need today is at your fingertips. Mobile internet has become an essential and a companion for everyone who has access to it. Our focus therefore is to continue ensuring more people in Malaysia benefit from enjoying quality internet services nationwide,”
Digi said that Malaysia has 79.2% smartphone users and a mobile penetration rate of approximately 140%, with most users getting the first experience on the internet through their mobile devices. Of this, Digi provides “consistent high-speed internet” to 7 million customers on its base, a jump of 16.9% year-on-year. With the “fast track rollout of its LTE services”, around 1.5million customers today enjoy LTE services, an increase by more than 2-fold from a year ago, the Telco said.
Telenor Group is present in 13 markets across Asia and Europe. The company entered Asia in 1996, and has since emerged as one of the leading regional mobile operator. As of the third quarter 2015, Telenor Group’s six Asian operations generated more than 50 percent of the group’s total revenues and Norway and the rest of Europe about 20 percent each. Telenor Group has added more than 170 million subscribers in the past decade.
