Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the two parties collaborate to benefit students through Internet connectivity services.

Via the MoU, Celcom has deployed 600 WiFi access points, covering both indoor and outdoor areas within UTP which is located at Seri Iskandar near Tronoh, Perak Darul Ridzuan. The WiFi coverage is said to offer Internet service to more than 8,000 students and about 900 employees of UTP.
Starts from RM30/month for 22.5GB, all Celcom WiFi access points are secured with unique ID and password, providing a minimum of 1Gbps of high speed internet to the users.
The deal is valued at RM15 million over 5 years.
Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS told MalaysianWireless that the Celcom WiFi network has “no network restrictions” and he hope that students would use the service for “learning purpose”.
No educational contents were offered as part of the Internet service.
Meanwhile, Celcom CEO Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly told MalaysianWireless that the Telco has included “Tronoh as part of its prime city program” where Celcom would improve its network gradually in the city to be 4.5G ready.
Moving forward, Celcom and UTP will be collaborating in various key initiatives towards the development of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS undergraduates. Celcom Axiata will be one of UTP Industry Advisory Panel members, where the company is given the opportunity to share ideas on telecommunication and conduct leadership activities via students’ societies or clubs.
The collaboration will also generate opportunities for student internship and career openings with Celcom or Axiata Group Berhad, as well as the prospects for UTP students to participate in entrepreneurial programmes developed by Celcom and its partners, both parties said.
UTP, established in 1997, is one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia. The university is dedicated to the creation and sharing of knowledge in the fields of science, engineering and technology.
