Average Internet Speed in Malaysia now 6.4Mbps, ranking dropped to 74 – Akamai

Akamai Technologies, Inc., one of the leading content delivery network (CDN) services in world, released its First Quarter (Q1), 2016 State of the Internet (SOTI) Report last week.

Based on data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform, the report provides insight into key global statistics such as connection speeds, broadband adoption metrics, notable Internet disruptions, IPv4 exhaustion and IPv6 implementation.

Internet speed in Malaysia & Asia Pacific (Akamai Q1, 2016 SOTI report):

Akamai measured the Internet speed in Malaysia from over 2 million unique IPv4 addresses.

Average Internet connection speed in Asia Pacific:

Malaysia Average Internet Connection Speed was 6.4Mbps in Q1 2016, ranking dropped to 74 globally (vs rank 73 in Q4 2015).

  2. Hong Kong: 19.9Mbps
  3. Japan: 18.2Mbps
  4. Singapore: 16.5Mbps
  5. Taiwan: 14.8Mbps
  6. Thailand: 10.8Mbps
  7. New Zealand: 10.5Mbps
  8. Australia: 8.8Mbps
  9. Malaysia: 6.4Mbps
  10. Sri Lanka: 5.4Mbps
  11. Vietnam: 5Mbps
  12. Indonesia: 4.5Mbps
  13. China: 4.3Mbps
  14. Philippines: 3.5Mbps
  15. India: 3.5Mbps

Average Internet Peak Connection Speed in Asia Pacific:

Malaysia Average Internet Peak Connection Speed was at 46.3Mbps in Q1 2016 (vs 42Mbps Q4 2015), ranking improved to 54 globally (from 55 in Q4 2015).

  4. South Korea: 103.6Mbps
  5. Japan: 84.6Mbps

  9. Malaysia: 46.3Mbps
  10. Australia: 43.8Mbps
  11. Sri Lanka: 35.4Mbps
  12. Vietnam: 34.1Mbps
  13. China: 31Mbps
  14. Philippines: 29.9Mbps
  15. India: 25.5Mbps

Some 68% of Internet connection from Malaysia have speeds above 4Mbps, ranking at 69 globally. As for speeds above 10Mbps, Akamai detected only 11% of Internet connection have such speeds, ranking at 66 globally.

As for mobile Internet speeds, Akamai’s report showed that Malaysia has an average speed of 3.3Mbps in Q1 2016 (vs 2.5Mbps in Q4 2015). Average peak mobile Internet speed in Malaysia was at 26.1Mbps (vs 24.5Mbps in Q4 2015).

Global Average Internet speed improved from 6.3Mbps in Q1 2016 (vs 5.6Mbps Q4 2015).

Top 10 Average Peak Internet Connection Speed in the World:

Global Average Peak Internet connection speed was at 34.7Mbps (vs 32.5Mbps Q4 2015).
